Schizophrenia Psychiatry Services

Overview-

a long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation.

Symptoms-

Hallucinations.
Delusions.
Disorganised thinking.
Lack of motivation.
Slow movement.
Change in sleep patterns.
Poor grooming or hygiene.
Changes in body language and emotions.

Causes-

Genetic factors. A predisposition to schizophrenia can run in families.
Biochemical factors. Certain biochemical substances in the brain are believed to be involved in schizophrenia, especially a neurotransmitter called dopamine.
Family relationships.
Stress.
Alcohol and other drug use.

Treatment-

Treatment is usually lifelong and often involves a combination of medications, psychotherapy, and coordinated specialty care services.
