Letting Go of What No Longer Serves You Before the Holidays

therapist counseling psychiatrist by Morgan Pscyhiatry (1)

As the year begins to wind down, many of us start to feel the pressure of the upcoming holiday season — to do more, give more, be more. But before we dive into the busyness of the months ahead, this is the perfect time to pause, take a breath, and let go of what’s been weighing us down.

Letting go doesn’t always mean drastic change. Sometimes it’s as simple as releasing habits, expectations, or emotions that no longer serve your growth or peace of mind.

Why Letting Go Matters

We often hold on to things out of comfort or fear — old routines, relationships, guilt, or perfectionism. But carrying that emotional clutter takes up valuable space. By letting go, you create room for calm, joy, and connection — exactly what the holiday season is meant to bring.

Think of it like decluttering your home before guests arrive — but instead of clearing a closet, you’re clearing mental and emotional space.

What You Might Consider Releasing

Unrealistic expectations. The holidays don’t have to look picture-perfect. Focus on what feels meaningful, not what looks ideal.

People-pleasing. It’s okay to say no. Protecting your peace is a form of self-care.

Negative self-talk. Speak to yourself the way you would to someone you love.

Old grudges or guilt. Forgiveness (for yourself or others) lightens your emotional load.

Overcommitment. You don’t have to say yes to every event or obligation.

Take inventory of what’s been draining you — and imagine setting it down before stepping into the holidays.

How to Gently Let Go

Letting go is a process, not a one-time decision. Here are a few grounding ways to begin:

Reflect: Journal about what feels heavy or misaligned in your life right now.

Breathe: Try a short mindfulness exercise — breathe in calm, breathe out what you no longer need.

Simplify: Choose one small thing to release this week (a toxic thought, a “should,” a digital distraction).

Replace with intention: When you let something go, fill that space with something that nurtures you — a peaceful walk, a call with a friend, or quiet time with a cup of tea.

Moving Into the Holidays with Intention

Letting go is ultimately an act of kindness toward yourself. It allows you to enter the holidays not overwhelmed or burdened, but present — ready to connect, reflect, and truly enjoy the season.

As you look ahead, ask yourself:

“What do I want to carry with me into the new year — and what is it time to finally set down?”

The answer doesn’t have to be perfect. Even small releases create space for peace, gratitude, and growth.
